    Review of The BlackBerry Playbook

    By admin | April 22, 2011

There is small doubt that the BlackBerry playbook is the most anticipated product to come from RIM in a long time. After all, the initial ad was about seven months ago – which is a hefty amount of time in the rapidly changing world of mobile technology.

Back in September, 2010 newly announced playbook seemed to have all the necessary muscle to carve on the spot market for tablets. It was the first tablet offers dual-core processor. The latter, coupled with 1 GB of RAM seemed like a certain recipe for success. It was no surprise when the original playbook iPad trounced in comparison browser – RIM product was simply better hardware.

But that was then. Now BlackBerry playbook face some hard competition in the dual-core to 2:01 horde Apple iPad offers Android comb. You are welcome to see how the newcomer fares in our brief hands-on review. We start with the pros and cons.

    Key features

    Main disadvantages

It is honest to say that the list of disadvantages includes some serious omissions tomb of functionality otherwise fantastic looking operating system. I can all but guarantee you, folks, that the way RIM will settle and timeline will ultimately seal the fate of the product and make it a success or a failure.

In regard to design and build quality, BlackBerry playbook is my high score. Its compact body is a high representation of “form follows function” credo design. There is a chance that the device could show brings mixed reactions – some might find it gorgeous in its simplicity, while others might complain that it’s dull. I am fascinated by personal playbook seems underestimated.

RIM has made no compromise with the materials used to build their first film. It seems to be solidly constructed and is certainly nice to have. The back is made from high quality plastic with a matte end, leaving no chance for fingerprints. Not the same can be said about the front of the device. The front glass is coated magnesium, which is quite prone to fingerprints. After a small period of use, I could see the history of gestures were applied to the tablet when I turned off the screen. RIM was thinking about this and there is a pretty simple fix – there is a cleaning cloth included with the retail playbook.

Top of the playbook is home to all four buttons of the device with a 3.5mm connector. Get second volume button, a play / pause, and on / off button of the device. I want to stress that the latter is a bit of hassle to use because of its small size. You need to apply some serious pressure to it (preferably with a fingernail) to obtain the desired result.

At the bottom of the device will find a charger / USB connection port, an HDMI output and a dock connector. The sides of the tablet are free of any buttons and it has a pleasure in landscape mode.

Out of the box, you get all the accessories you need for the device other than headphones. I’m not upset about this fact, but, since the latter were never the best in accessories offered by RIM stock earlier in the devices. There is an awesome playbook neoprene pouch that fits snuggly and protects it from unwanted accidents. Charger and USB are standard micro USB cable.

In terms of size is concerned, the tablet can be considered definitive small compared with its rivals. The 7-inch at the bottom in terms of compressed size, and in my opinion, this is a excellent thing. You can easily hold the device in one hand, without worrying that it might accidentally slip and fall. It is also simple to wear – I could fit in my jacket pocket and was a huge deal for me because I’m not a huge fan of carrying around an extra bag.

The software is where things get fascinating with the playbook. This is the first device introduced by RIM, which is equipped with a groundbreaking new platform based on the QNX operating system – a radical departure from what the company has done so far. Show the new operating system while keeping some ancient school BlackBerryness. RIM is putting a huge bet on it to bring new supporters to keep the base from running and off with some iPad or tablet based on Android instead. We see this operating system into new BlackBerry smartphones in the near future as well.

We all know that web browser is among the highest measuring rod for all the tablets on the market today. It is hands down the most powerful feature of the playbook at the time. It’s quick and simple to use gesture controls. It supports tabs and pinch to zoom. It is easily the best web browser I have seen in a device of this type. Flash support makes opening any website a breeze – even handling high-definition videos on YouTube better than embedded application.

Multitasking and switching between applications is also a pleasure to BlackBerry playbook. There is strong evidence of their WEB Palm OS in this operation, but I’m just going to pretend is not there and delight in the gesture control and smooth transition between different tasks.

AppWorld is supposed to be RIM’s answer to Apple’s AppStore and Google’s Android Market. The thing is that at this moment, he, well, it is not. RIM promises thousands of applications to be “available soon”, so I hope that commitment will bear fruit sooner rather than later. Much has been said about support for Android applications via an emulator too. I am personally looking forward to this feature with fantastic excitement, because it could be the secret ingredient that brings the majesty playbook. Small amount of applications currently available are well sorted into categories and are easily accessible.

BlackBerry playbook comes with a lot of features incorporated which are ubiquitous, but useful. Do you have a weather application and a card reader box. The device also opens office documents and changes without a need for additional software. Music and video players are simple and fun to use. There are two games preloaded in the film, courtesy of Electronic Arts – Tetris and Need for Speed. Both use the gorgeous and powerful hardware to make a excellent mobile gaming experience.

Settings are simple to carry compressed and are intuitive to use. I get a chance to test BlackBerry Bridge, because I do not own a BlackBerry smartphone. I connected to my tablet PC easily with USB cable (not a huge fan of Bluetooth). The device appears as a drive on your computer disk, file management as simple and simple.

Check out the video in UI playbook in action:

Here are some of the playbook BlackBerry 5-megapixel samples. As you see, photo quality is not spectacular and there is a lot to be desired. A small consolation is that it sets look fantastic on screen tablet. You will notice that there are five full-megapixel resolution, I accidentally shot in the widescreen capture mode. You can be sure that in addition to the added part viewports, 5 megapixel pictures look no different, below are just a sample of cultures in 16:9:

There are several full 5 megapixel image, which regularly aspect ratio 4:3, just so you see no difference in photo quality:

In addition to still photography, BlackBerry playbook can shoot 1080p Full HD, also videos STI both chambers. For starters, here’s a video mashup of several samples taken in 720p BlackBerry playbook:

And here’s a sample shot in full HD. And do not forget to switch to 1080p and viewing video fullscreen opens to praise:

After several days of quality time with the playbook BlackBerry, you can describe in words exactly three – in progress. In terms of hardware is concerned, everything is compressed needed to be successful. Unfortunately for RIM, there are several competing proposals with similar specifications, which runs on software platforms much better established. And we all know that a film is as excellent as the applications they offer the consumer. In this department, playbook needs to dramatically improve in the shortest time possible to avoid also ran the race as a tablet.
